Alex Washington Devoted father of Meaghan (Matthew) Harrison and Alejandro Washington; cherished "Zayde" of Elliot Washington Harrison and Lola Campbell; loving son of the late Alex and Beatrice Washington; dear eldest brother of Charles, Kevin (Darlene) , Sherman (Helen), Ronald, Susan and the late Arthur, Sam and Roland. Born in Toledo, Ohio, Alex graudated from South Park High School in Buffalo, New York. At 18, he enlisted in the Navy to follow in the footsteps of his uncles. . He is a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in active duty from 1965-1969. In 1970 he began his higher education at Emerson College in Boston, where he majored in Media and Performing Arts, earning his Bachelors of Fine Arts in 1974. In 1978, he earned his Masters of Fine Arts in Film/Video and Photographic Arts from Massachusetts College of Art. His professional career began at WBZ - TV Boston as a Cinematographer/Editor in the Public Affairs Film Unit. In the early 80's he joined WGBH Boston as Videographer and Field Producer, where he filmed many shows and documentaries, including "Say Brother" and "Ten O'Clock News." He was a key contributor on the American Public Television documentary "You Don't Have to Ride Jim Crow!" and the WGBH documentary "Vermont: The Whitest State in the Union," which won an Emmy. In the early 80's he hosted an evening Jazz radio show on Classical Radio Station, WCRB. In 1994, he left WGBH to begin his teaching career - first at the Tilton School in NH, and later The Hill School in PA. Mr. Washington taught history of art and music, photography, public speaking; directed plays; coached sports, and served as a student advisor. Many students remember him for his enthusiastic, encouraging, and welcoming spirit, which made them feel at home. He retired from The Hill in 2014 and returned to his family's hometown in Buffalo. Alex was known for his optimistic outlook on life, artistic and vocal talents, social nature, rebellious streak, and observational skills. Throughout his life and career he had many passions, including travel and cultural immersion, music of all genres, culinary art (especially the procurement of ingredients), acting, tennis, riding his bike, camping, and fishing. He was an affectionate father who instilled in his son and daughter a strong interest in pursuing all of these passions. Alex's love of learning was matched by his love of teaching. He had a strong desire to see others better themselves, and to help them on their path. He will always be remembered for his commitment to positivity, dramatic sense of humor, and brilliant smile. Relatives and friends may visit the LOMBARDO FUNERAL HOME (Northtowns Chapel) 885 Niagara Falls Blvd., near Eggert/Sheridan Dr. on Saturday (January 8) from 9-11AM. Military Honors and a funeral service will immediately follow at 11AM.
