Dawne M. Flammger

Flammger of the Town of Tonawanda spent much of her life engaged in research, travel and teaching. "She definitely was not one to sit," said her daughter, Amy Naab. Mrs. Flammger, who was diagnosed with live bile duct cancer in 2017, died Nov. 3 in Buffalo Hospice, Cheektowaga. She was 62. Even after her diagnosis, Mrs. Flammger remained tenacious and conducted her own research on the rare form of cancer with which she was diagnosed to ensure that she received the best medical treatment options available, her daughter said. Mrs. Flammger even attended the 2018 Cholangiocarcinoma conference in Salt Lake City, where she connected with others affected by the disease. Born Dawne M. White in Buffalo, she was a 1975 graduate of West Seneca West High School. She earned at least three academic degrees, including an associate's degree from Genesee Community College, a bachelor of science in managing/marketing travel and tourism from the University at Buffalo School of Management and a master of science in adult education and international trade from UB. Mrs. Flammger taught classes in travel and tourism at Bryant & Stratton and Daemen colleges. She was the author of the textbook, "Destination: North America," that was published in 1993. She also was a customs broker and small business owner. From 2007 to 2017, Mrs. Flammger was a technical writer for Frontier Science and Technology Research Foundation. She enjoyed traveling the world. Through her association with Frontier Science, Mrs. Flammger traveled to Malawi in West Africa, where she helped train company employees for an AIDS research project. At home, Mrs. Flammger enjoyed discovering the rich history of Buffalo and Western New York. She served as a docent on walking tours in downtown Buffalo. She photographed the architecture in the region and destination sites, such as Forest Lawn. In addition to making crafts, Mrs. Flammger enjoyed ghost-hunting and visiting Lily Dale, a meeting place for spiritualists and free-thinkers in Chautauqua County. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, David; a son, Paul; a daughter, Amy Naab; a brother, Jack White; and a sister, Kim Bower. A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Nov. 16 in Lombardo Funeral Home, 885 Niagara Falls Blvd., Town of Tonawanda.
