Donald Edward Moses of Buffalo, NY, one of the City of Buffalos bravest, passed away peacefully July 31, 2023 at age 72. Donald was married to his beloved wife Marsha (ne Davis) Moses for 42 years. Devoted father to Brian Ross, Jumanne Pitts and Brandi Moses. Beloved grandfather to Bailey Ross, Janaya Pitts and Nejeri Pitts. Loving son of the late Leroy and Emogene (ne Anderson) Moses. Dear brother to Larry (Alice) Moses, Michael (Anne) Moses, Cheryl (Shelton) Hasan, Karen Moses, Patrick (Rayjane) Moses, Christopher (Saudia) Moses, Belinda Moses, and the late Kenneth Moses, Steven Moses, Darrell Moses, and Brandon Moses. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Donald was the patriarch of the Moses family. The oldest of 12 siblings, Donald was the go-to person for the entire Moses family and actively participated in the mentoring of his siblings, children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Commonly referred to as "Uncle Donnie" by all of his nieces and nephews, he shared his wisdom and his "no excuses, pull yourself up by the bootstraps" mentality to all that sought his counsel. Donald was a proud graduate of Father Baker High School, Class of 1968. He went on to earn his Associate degree in Business Administration from Erie Community College in 1999. Donald retired from the City of Buffalo Fire Department in 2006 after honorably and bravely serving for over 28 years. He served the majority of his career as a Firefighter at Engine 2/Ladder 9 located at the corner of Jersey and Plymouth, and then Virginia and Elmwood in the City of Buffalo. In 1985, he received the Memorial Award for Bravery from Buffalo Fire Commissioner John Tubridy for pulling a civilian out of a burning building after sustaining singed lungs due to smoke inhalation while he was assigned to Ladder 9. Donald spent the last 8 years of his career as the Employee Assistance Coordinator for the Buffalo Fire Department, where he revolutionized that position by providing struggling firefighters with assistance that exceeded the resources available in Western New York. He also collaborated with the Buffalo Police EAP coordinator to provide those same services to Buffalo Police Officers. Donald also volunteered in the community that he served. He was an assistant youth baseball coach and also delivered medication to the homes of terminally ill patients on a volunteer basis. Donald was also an extraordinary athlete, who was well known throughout Western New Yorks Baseball, Softball, Football, Basketball, and Boxing community. Donald was a golden glove boxer in the late 1960s. He was also inducted into the Western New York Softball Hall of Fame in 1992, the JFK Touch Football League Hall of Fame in 2013, and the Western New York Baseball Hall of Fame in September 2021. In 2022, he received the Inner-City Sports Legends award for Outstanding Achievements in sports and in the community.
