Matteo Sassanelli

d. June 4, 2024

Matteo Sassanelli July 14, 1942 - June 04, 2024 Matteo Sassanelli, 81, of Lackawanna, NY, entered into rest peacefully on 06-04-2024 peacefully at home with his loving wife, Marlene and beloved children, Anna, Gina and Donald. Matteo was born in Bari, Italy in 1942 to Donato and Anna Sassanelli (nee Della Grazie). He was preceded in death by his parents and his oldest Sister, Maria DAlesio. He is survived by his younger Brother, Pasquale (Sue) Sassanelli and youngest Sister, Angela (Wesley) Rzazewski. He and his family immigrated to Canada in 1959 landing in Montreal and then making their way by train and settling in Hamilton, Ontario. His entire life was that of hard work and fierce dedication to the well-being of his family. Matteo met his devoted Wife, Marlene (DiFranco) in 1967 at Club Roma in St. Catherines and they married in Buffalo, New York in 1968. Their 3 children, Anna (Robert) Stevener, Gina Steves and Donald (Michelle Racine) Sassanelli meant the world to them. They also were the proud Grandparents to Grace Rose and Ave Marie Sassanelli. He always wanted nothing more than to share laughs and smiles with his loved ones, especially if it included a good game of cards or karaoke. Matteo's singing was often compared to the likes of Bocelli, Pavarotti and Sinatra. Dare to be said, at times, even better. He found such joy in singing for others. His talents could also be found in the garden. He loved his garden and took great pride in the fruits of his labor. He could literally make things grow from stone. His meticulous craftsmanship as a concrete finisher for so many years may have played a part in this. Matteo is also preceded in death by his Brother-in-law Samuel (Carol) DiFranco, and Sister-in-law Lucille Gavin. He is survived by Sister-in-law Carmela (Nino) Conte, Brother-in-law Mario (Kathy) DiFranco and Lynda (Robert) Mann. He is the proud Uncle to many Nieces and Nephews and great Nieces and Nephews. Matteo will always be remembered with so much respect and adoration for the endless memories he created for his family and friends. His smile and song will forever be in our hearts. Relatives and friends may visit the LOMBARDO FUNERAL HOME (Southtowns Chapel) 3060 Abbott Rd., near Lake Ave. on Saturday (June 8) from 12-4PM. A funeral service will immediately follow. Flowers gratefully declined.
