Monica Carmen Lawrence

Our sister in Christ, Monica Carmen Lawrence, nee Gowie, affectionately called Rose, of 170 Floss Avenue, Buffalo, New York and 86 Washington Drive, Windsor Heights, St. Anns Bay, St. Ann, Jamaica, West Indies passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, April 11, 2024 at her home in Buffalo, New York after a long illness. She was 81 years old. Monica was born on February 28, 1943 in Priory, St. Ann, Jamaica West Indies to Margaret Gowie and Nathaniel Robertson. She attended St. Anns Bay Primary School. She married the love of her life, Kenneth George Lawrence, her beloved KG, on August 24, 1960. She visited her aunt Amy in New York in 1963 with her eldest daughter Valerie and spent approximately two years with her aunt Amy before returning to Jamaica. She was a seamstress during these years in the mid-60s in Jamaica. She also worked at Cosi Apartment, Blue Carib, and Turtle Towers between 1969 and 1972. She then became a housewife after the birth of her daughter Lisa in 1972 and later welcomed her youngest Bethune in 1976. She migrated to Buffalo, New York in 1979 where she lived with her cousin Ginevra aka Marva. Marva as administrator of Erie County Medical Center facilitated Monicas job at ECMC as a dietary aide where she worked until her retirement in 2006. She was married for 43 years before her beloved KG passed away on June 18, 2003. She is survived by her 6 children Karl (Patricia) Lawrence, Valerie (Tracy) Thomas, Janet Lawrence, Karlene (Johnny) Weickerson, Lisa (Ewan) Waldin, and Bethune (Gerald Sr.) Pierre-Louis; grandchildren: Lorraine (Michael) Farrow, Marlon Barnaby, Keishonta Lawrence, Karl Hakeim Lawrence, Morgen Weickerson, Nahlia Weickerson, Gerald Pierre Louis, Jr., and Logan Kenneth Pierre-Louis. Great grandchildren: Clarence Thomas, III, Lamar Thomas, MarNajia Barnaby, Marlon Michael Barnaby, Marshawna Barnaby, MarQuan Barnaby, Akil Crump, Mia Farrow, and Kennedi Lawrence. Siblings: Alexander Montgomery Jordan, Inez Gowie, Leva (Douglas) Carter, Henry Brown and Shaun McLean. Nephews and nieces: Dwight (Vivette) Dickenson, Davida Bingham, Dwane (Kellie) Bingham, Deanroy (Kerrylyn) Carter, Camela Carter, Cherese (Howard) Raffington, Omar (Chantal) Carter, Alexander Montgomery Jordan, Jr., Kemron Jordan, Roshane (Donique) Jordan, Lori-Ann Brown, Krystal Brown, Shavar (Shauna) McLean, Lason McLean, Gavin McLean, Shaunique McLean, Sofia McLean, and sister-in-law Veronica (L. Alexander) Roberts. May her soul rest in peace!!!! A Funeral Service will be celebrated Saturday afternoon, May 11th in St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral, 139 Pearl St, Buffalo, NY 14202 at 1:00 o'clock. Please assemble at church. Interment to follow in St. Matthew's Cemetery.
