Obituary

Richard Francis Granger of Buffalo, New York passed away peacefully on September 28th, 2026, at the age of 76. He resided in Buffalo NY throughout his lifetime, and was treasured by his friends and family.

Rick is survived by his partner Rena Massis, cousins Tim Burmeier (Claire) and Greta Lichterfeld, nephews Jeff Berlet (Stephenie) and Paul Berlet (Jill), great nephews Paulie Berlet and Peter Berlet (Alicia), and great nieces Allison Berlet and Samantha Mercer (Simon). He was preceded in death by his sister Susan Lawler, brother Jimmy Granger, and parents Doris and Edwin Granger.

Rick was known for his empathy, kindness, and desire to help others. He was also passionate about his hobbies, including mountain climbing during his earlier years, and following a strict exercise regimen every morning in the years that followed. He was an avid football fan, and his fervent wish was that his favorite team, the Buffalo Bills, win the Superbowl. He also valued religion, attended Mass regularly, and made faith an integral part of his life.

Another of his outstanding qualities was participation community services. In addition to delivering meals to those in need through Meals on Wheels, Rick served as a group leader in Recovery International, a mental health self-help organization, for many years, imparting his knowledge and wisdom to others, and giving inspiration, hope and insight to many group members along the way.

Rick was also an animal lover, and part of his family were two beautiful cats, Kobe and Karli, both of whom adored Rick.

One of Recovery International’s expressions is that “humor is out best friend.” Along those lines, Rick was known for his quick wit, dry sense of humor, and gifted his friends with many remarks and stories which reflected his unique assessment of situations, which always generated laughter.

Because of his compassion and empathy toward others, Rick was cherished by his friends and family, and will be sorely missed. Rest in Peace, dear Rick.
