Robert E. Barnes, 78, of Amherst, NY, passed away on November 21, 2024, at his home. Born in Albany, NY, he was the son of the late Edward and Ida (Kiesche) Barnes. Bob was the loving husband for 53 years to Grace Barnes, devoted father to James (Monica) Barnes and Sarah (Kevin) Barnes-Ryan, and fun-loving grandfather to Michael, Anna, and Hazel. He was brother to the late Raymond (Virginia) Barnes, Dorothy (Richard) Rohrmiller, and survived by Eleanor (late Robert) Shutter. He is also survived by special brother-in-law, Robert Martin, and by many nieces, nephews, and friends. Bob was a graduate of the former Philip Schuyler High School in the South End of Albany. He earned his AAS from Hudson Valley Community College, BS from the State University College at Buffalo, and MS from the University at Buffalo. Dr. Barnes earned his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from the University at Buffalo. He worked at the University at Buffalos School of Engineering and Applied Sciences for over 30 years where he served in a number of capacities, including Director of External Affairs, Adjunct Associate Professor, Associate Dean for External Affairs, and Senior Associate Dean. Bob was elected as a member of the New York Nu Chapter of Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society, where he later served as an Advisor and Chief Advisor for many years. Bob served in the New York Army National Guard in Albany and Buffalo between 1968 and 1974. He received an Honorable Discharge and received the medal of "Meritorious Service." Bob was a member of Kenmore Baptist Church for over 50 years where he served in numerous roles as a Sunday School teacher, Deacon, Trustee, and Moderator. His faith was exemplified by a life devoted to Christian service. Bob was also an Eagle Scout and a member of Troop and Post 20 in Albany. He subsequently became a long-time scout leader as an adult. He coached youth baseball and softball, and kept the New York Yankees as his favorite team. He was an avid supporter of his childrens and grandchildrens activities, including school, music, sports, and scouts. Bobs indomitable spirit and enduring love will continue to carry his legacy in the hearts and minds of his family and friends. He was laid to rest in a private family burial at Acacia Park Cemetery, North Tonawanda. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled in the future. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Kenmore Baptist Church, 10 Wardman Road, Kenmore, NY 14217, or to The Salvation Army, 960 Main Street, Buffalo, NY 14202.
