Stephen Ekeh

September 14, 1977 — September 27, 2025

Stephen Eserovwe Omejevwe Ekeh was born on September 14, 1977, in Ibadan, Nigeria, to Peter and Helen Ekeh, both professors at the University of Ibadan. The youngest of five children, his early years were marked by boundless curiosity, a bright mind, and a budding athletic talent. He loved the company of his older siblings and was always at ease among adults, charming everyone with his warmth, humor, and inquisitive spirit.

As a young teenager, Steve moved with his family to Buffalo, New York, where he attended Sweet Home High School. There, he distinguished himself as both a scholar and an athlete, excelling in track and field, where he successfully competed at the state level, and in basketball, where his determination and teamwork left a lasting impression on teammates and coaches alike.

Following high school, Steve attended the University at Buffalo, earning a bachelor's degree in Sociology in 1999. He began his professional career in Buffalo, working in the financial services industry, before relocating to Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2010. At the time of his passing, Steve was employed with Fifth Third Bank, where he was admired for his professionalism, dependability, and genuine care for people.

Though Steve made his home in the United States, he maintained a deep and abiding love for his country of origin, Nigeria. He remained proud of his roots and often spoke fondly of his childhood in Ibadan, his family's academic legacy, and the vibrant culture that shaped his identity. His pride in Nigeria was matched by a sincere interest in its growth and a lifelong connection to his extended family and community there.

Steve's love for family was central to who he was. No matter the distance, he remained closely connected to his parents, siblings, nieces, nephews, and extended relatives-always quick to celebrate their successes, offer words of encouragement, or share a joyful laugh. His kindness, humility, and generosity of spirit endeared him to all who crossed his path.

Outside of work and family, Steve's enthusiasm for sports never waned. He was a devoted fan of the Buffalo Bills, and his excitement on game days was infectious. He also loved to travel, explore new cultures, and connect with people from all walks of life-reflecting his enduring curiosity and adventurous nature.

Stephen will be remembered for his open-hearted generosity, easy laugh, and radiant spirit. His life, though cut short, was full of love, adventure, and joy. He was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.
