Passed away on Tuesday September 17th at Mary Agnes Manor in Buffalo, NY. He was 68 years old. Steven Lee Baer was the oldest of 5 children and was a longtime resident of Buffalo. He grew up in Hamburg where he graduated from Hamburg Central High. He later received his Bachelor of Business degree from Houghton College. He was an avid chess player and was a member of the Amateur Chess Association of Western NY. We have been told, "He was a talented chess player and always a shining example of good sportsmanship his presence in the Buffalo chess community will be greatly missed". He participated in chess tournaments locally; he also traveled across the U.S. attending tournaments and events. Along with his chess travel, he especially loved his annual Thanksgiving get-together with his siblings either in Maryland at Ellen and Richard's home or last year in Michigan at Brian's home. Steve loved Jesus having come to know HIM personally when he was a teenager. He was devoted to reading the Bible, researching in Bible commentaries and discussing with others what he read. He also loved singing hymns and would know many by heart. Steve was active in worship and fellowship with his church family, Buffalo First Church of the Nazarene serving as Sunday School teacher, Trustee/Board member, was part of the ministry team that did outreach to the community and in the church's broader ministry involvements. He also regularly attended prayer meeting via Zoom with his brother Glenn and wife, Toshiko at Trinity Anglican Fellowship in Columbia, MD. Along with his many interests, he was attentive to whats going on politically and would often serve as an Election Judge. He was a diehard Buffalo Bills fan and enjoyed watching them play and enjoyed watching other teams and individual sports. He is the loving son of the late Herbert J Baer Jr. and Joyce E Baer; dear brother of Glenn R. (Toshiko) Baer, Ellen E. (Richard Davis) Baer, Brian D. Baer and the late Sharon Baer; fond uncle of Daniel J. Baer, also survived by cousins and friends. The family wishes to thank Buffalo First Church of the Nazarene who walked regularly with Steve and loved, cared for and served him wholeheartedly, truly Jesus with skin on! Plus, we thank a host of other people that contributed to his life by providing support, meals, transportation etc. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, September 28th at 3pm at Buffalo First Church of the Nazarene, 1270 Kenmore Ave, Buffalo, NY 14216. In lieu of flowers, we ask that contributions be made to Buffalo First Church of the Nazarene.
