Of Snyder, NY, passed away peacefully surrounded by those he loved with all his heart. Beloved husband of Claire (nee Lega) Carlo; devoted father of Anneke (Sean) Andrews of Denver, CO, Aristotle Joseph Carlo of Rochester, NY, and Eve Charlotte Carlo of Snyder; cherished son of Sharon and Raymond Carlo of Snyder; loving brother of Jennifer Anne Carlo of Marshfield, VT; ex-wife and mother of his children, Jennifer DeSantis Carlo; cherished aunts and uncles, and several dear cousins including Joe (Meghan) Carlo, Robbyn (Bill) Robnett and Dale Scott Peterman who he loved like siblings. He was preceded in death by his wickedly clever sister, Julie Lynn Carlo.
In May 2013, Tim was diagnosed with a rare and incurable form of cancer, adenoid cystic carcinoma, which had already metastasized to his lungs. The initial prognosis was bleak. With Claire as his healthcare advocate and biggest fan, and a large contingent of people supporting him, Tim pursued cutting-edge treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, Northwestern Medicine in Chicago, IL, Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, and received palliative care at the University of Rochester Medicine. He faced clinical trials, major surgeries, radiation, immunotherapy and chemotherapy with extraordinary courage and positivity. It was critically important to him that his experience be used to help others; he allowed all tumor biopsy samples and medical records to be made available to researchers in perpetuity. Tim was adamant that no one “loses their battle with cancer,” instead, they punch cancer in the face for as long as they can and lose their battle with mortality.
Tim grew up in Akron, NY (ACS Class of 1986) and attended St. Bonaventure University earning a bachelor’s degree and Master of Business Administration. His love for Bona, and the life-long friendships he made there, was deep and strong.
Tim pursued many different career paths and job opportunities. Early in his career he accepted a job in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, seizing the opportunity to experience life in Europe. For the past 9 years, Tim was successfully self-employed as a consultant, project manager and fractional Chief Financial Officer for numerous clients. But Tim didn’t live to work, he worked to live and provide the best life possible for his family.
Tim was an honest man who told it like he saw it, whether talking about popular culture, sports or cancer treatments. He was a gifted athlete in many sports. Through sheer determination and the help of his personal trainer and close friends, one year after major, life-changing surgery and intense radiation treatments, he completed the Tough Mudder. Also after his diagnosis, he took skating lessons and joined ice hockey teams, making more friends along the way. When Tim set a goal, he achieved it. One of his true passions was golf, and he played relentlessly over the past summer, oftentimes beating (competitive? very!) whomever he was with. For the past 9 years, the highlight of his week during the summer was playing golf at Dande Farms with his dad and friends.
Tim will be remembered for making deep, meaningful friendships in every facet of his life: Akron, St. Bonaventure University, Amsterdam, Burroughs Drive, his many places of employment including Exigence and The Reds Group Strategic Services, numerous baseball and softball teams, golf and his unofficial Dande Farms golf league, the Annual Carlo Invitational, the Pinehurst Boys, hockey, his “concert boyfriends,” SBG, and many more, including his beloved Peeps. Tim fiercely believed in the concept of showing up and making the effort to constantly connect with “his people.”
Tim’s greatest joy and accomplishment was being a present and devoted father to three exceptional human beings, Anneke, Ari and Eve. He always showed up and had their backs. His example of how to approach life and his sage advice, three rules to live by and spectacularly awful dad jokes will always be with them.
