Virginia Ann Ferguson, daughter of the late Nathaniel (Corrine) Currie Sr. (Memphis, TN) and Nell Opal Gibbs-Hudson (Louisville, KY), entered life on Tuesday, May 17, 1938 in Brownsville, TN. Virginia was the oldest of 12 siblings. Virginia, most often addressed as "Ma" or "Mawn" by her family, was admired for her strong faith in Jesus Christ and her gracious spirit of love that could easily be felt within moments of being in her presence. Frequently acknowledged and prestigiously regarded as "The Matriarch," Virginia was a God-fearing woman of faith and a pillar to her family, church family, friends, and neighbors. Virginia dedicated her life to ensuring that she lived truly as a living sacrifice for God and a model of true compassion and love for all to witness. Virginia transitioned from labor to reward on Thursday, August 1, 2024, while being surrounded by family. While living in Brownsville, TN, Virginia was a Friendship Missionary Baptist Church member. Virginia became the wife of the late John H. Ferguson and later the mother of four daughters: Margaret Ann Ferguson-Hart (1/3/55-4/2002), Shirley Ferguson (4/23/56-12/2001), Martha Smith, and Cynetra Ferguson. Virginia relocated to Buffalo, NY in 1971, where she continued to reside for the remainder of her life. As a resident of Buffalo, NY, she worked at Modern Linen and became a Home Healthcare Aide for Interim Healthcare. Virginia was a caregiver by nature and continued working in the field until she was called home to be with The Lord. In her spare time, Virginia enjoyed gardening, caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, talking on the phone and spending time with family and friends, cooking, crocheting, praying, reading her Bible, and watching/listening to sermons and gospel songs, particularly from one of her favorite quartet groups Lee Williams & The Spiritual QCs. Upon relocating, she became the grandmother to five grandchildren: the late Frankin (Jackie) Ferguson, Sherrel Ferguson (1977), the late Edward Charles "Edwin" Johnson II (12/13/78 - 11/30/2020), Chantel Jackson (1984), and Jon "Jay" Ferguson (1985). Virginia later became the great-grandmother to six great-grandchildren: Gamil Morehead (1995), Avyana Morehead (1997), Jahnay Morehead (2002), DeJon Betts (2003), Ronterion Jackson (2003), and Alani Betts (2009). Upon relocating to Buffalo, NY, Virginia joined The Memorial Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. J.H. Sanders and served faithfully until her transition to reward under the leadership of Pastor John W. Williams, of The New Zion Missionary Baptist Church (Buffalo, NY), and The Eastern Star Missionary Baptist Church (Toledo, OH). As a faithful servant & member of Memorial MBC, Virginia served on the Usher Board, briefly was a driver for the church van, and was secretary for the Sunday School Department. She is cherished by her siblings William Thomas (Lee) Gibbs of Decatur, IL, Nathaniel Currie Jr of Memphis (TN), Jimmy (Willeta) Hudson, Thomas Hudson, Clarence Hudson, Mary Nell Hudson, and Ronnie (Robin) Hudson, all of Louisville, KY. Virginia was preceded in death by her late husband, John H. Ferguson, brother Harold Currie, grandmother Mattie Gibbs, father Nathaniel (Corrine) Currie Sr., daughter Shirley Jean Ferguson-Springfield, daughter Margaret Ann Ferguson-Hart, mother Nell Opal Gibbs-Hudson, grandson Franklin Ferguson, grandson Edward Charles Johnson II, brother Wilbert Hudson, and sister Doris Farrington. Virginia leaves behind a rich legacy of family such as her daughters Martha N. Smith and Cynetra Ferguson, grandchildren Sherrel Ferguson, Chantel Jackson, and Jon Ferguson, and great-grandchildren Gamil "Bumpkin" Morehead, Avyana "Mama" Morehead, Jahnay "Thumbelina" Morehead, DeJon "DJ/D" Betts, Ronterion Jackson, and Alani "Muffin" Betts. She is loved by several nieces, nephews, other family members, as well as dear friends. Relatives and friends are invited to Memorial Missionary Baptist Church, 770 Humboldt Parkway, on Tuesday, August 13 from 11am-12pm. A funeral service will immediately follow at 12pm.
